Organic Pastures Raw Milk Recalled in California

The California Department of Food and Agriculture and the California Department of Public Health have recalled Organic Pastures raw dairy products as of Tuesday, November 15th.

Over the course of an eight-week period earlier this year, five people tested positive for E. Coli O157:H7; these five consumers reported drinking raw milk.

According to the California Department of Public Health, all products collected from the ill patients have been negative for E. Coli 0157:H7. The CDFA tests all Organic Pastures’ products every month for pathogens. Organic Pastures also uses a third- party for pathogen testing multiple times per week. All these tests have been negative.

Complain to the CDFA

No pathogens found and yet they recall the milk during Organic Pastures’ biggest week of the year? Something’s rotten in the state of California.

UPDATE: Ready Pac Lettuce Recalled; Tests Positive for E. Coli

While the milk tested negative for E. Coli, it appears that California lettuce has tested positive. I just got this bit of news in my inbox:

California-based Ready Pac Foods Inc. said it is voluntarily recalling 5,379 cases of bagged salad products containing Romaine lettuce on fears of E. coli contamination.

The cases being recalled have an ‘Use-by Date’ of November 18, 2011, and sold in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, and Washington. The company said no other Ready Pac Foods products are included in the recall.

The recall was initiated based on a single positive random sample result for E.coli O157:H7 reported to Ready Pac by the FDA. The company said that since the products meant for recall could be on store shelves, it is extending the recall to retailers as well as consumers. (Source)
