How I Discovered the Health Benefits of Silica

Back in my 20s, I healed myself from Rheumatoid Arthritis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I wrote a blog post about it here: How I Cured My Rheumatoid Arthritis with Diet & Supplements.

Read the post: How I Cured My Rheumatoid Arthritis with Diet & Supplements

After my miraculous cure, using only diet and supplements, I spent the past 20 years making my living as a health blogger. I also founded the world's biggest health blog network (which was attacked and shut down by the 3-letter agencies back in 2013).

I've spent the past few decades looking at what makes people sick and how they get better. What I have found is that yes, food matters, however, it is not as big of a piece of the puzzle as most people think.

What most of us suffer from is not so much nutritional deficiencies, but rather, being sickened by heavy metals and toxins, as well as bacteria and parasites. Yes, we need the right nutrients, but more than nutrition, we need detoxification.

I discovered silica several years ago when I was researching the harmful effects of fluoride and aluminum.

After realizing diet and nutrition changes weren't helping a lot of people, I came upon life-changing information about the real causes of disease.

How I Healed Our Nanny

Back in 2016, our former nanny, Jennifer, was suffering from chronic health issues: weekly migraine headaches, extremely painful ovarian cysts that were bursting every month, frequent seizures, and stubborn chronic acne.

Jennifer tried doing what I did to reverse Rheumatoid Arthritis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (click here to read my story and skip down to Jennifer’s Story). What worked for me was basically a gluten-free, casein-free, sugar-free diet. After 30 days of being completely faithful to the diet, she saw zero results.

Our nanny, Jennifer, in 2016

It was around that time that a food blogger friend of mine, Melissa Gallico, told me she just finished writing a book called The Hidden Cause of Acne.

What I didn’t know at the time was it was absolutely divine intervention. What are the chances she would have sent me that book at the precise moment we were looking for a cure for Jennifer? Remember, chronic acne was one of Jennifer's main issues. I turned out that the same thing that cured Jennifer's acne also cured her migraines, seizures and ovarian cysts.

What I learned from reading the book was that fluoride was the problem for Jennifer.

Within 30 days of removing all sources of fluoride (including kombucha – which we thought was healthy! – and Prozac,) 100% of Jennifer’s symptoms were completely GONE.

Fluoride Increases the Bioavailability of Aluminum

Soon after we cured Jennifer, I realized that fluoride actually increases the bioavailability of aluminum.

So maybe fluoride was only part of the problem!  Maybe the real underlying problem was aluminum.

The Aluminum Docs: Dennis Crouse and Chris Exley

That's when I discovered Dr. Dennis Crouse. In 2018, his book came out, called Silica Water: The Secret of Healthy Longevity in the Aluminum Age.

Crouse majored in biochemistry at Harvard College and has a Ph.D. in chemistry from Harvard University – so he had a long background of understanding this kind of stuff.

Not only that, but he was a biohacker like me – he was able to reverse his mother's Alzheimer's disease by detoxing aluminum. He tells the story in his book.

This made sense to me, because I had been studying the work of Dr. Christopher Exley, who was making similar discoveries with aluminum and Alzheimer's and also autism.

Imagine You are an Aluminum Atom by Dr. Christopher Exley, PhD

Of course, that's why the Medical Industrial Complex ended up cancelling Dr. Exley, and completely cutting off all of his funding for his UK laboratory. Because he connected the dots from autism and aluminum to vaxxines.

Christopher Exley study on Alzheimer's Disease, aluminum, and silica water

Notice a pattern? I got cancelled, too – wiped off of every social media platform. It's like they really don't want us to know this!

Yes, almost all vaxxines contain aluminum as an adjuvant. Now you know why they are pushing aluminum and fluoride on us 24/7 – they want us sick so they can make money off of us.

Silica and the Blue Zones

Anyway, in his book, Dr. Crouse focuses on the "Blue Zones" — regions like Okinawa and Sardinia where people live exceptionally long, healthy lives.

A lot has been written about the Blue Zones over the years, in multiple bestselling books. The theory is people are eating a "Mediterranean Diet." But that doesn't really make sense because the diets are very different when you compare Okinawa, Japan to Sardinia, Greece.

It was Dennis Crouse who reexamined the Blue Zones and realized those areas of the world have very high levels of silica in the groundwater.

Crouse was the one who made the connection between the Blue Zones and SILICA. He postulated that it was the silica that was responsible for the incredible rates of longevity in those areas.

In his book, wrote, “It is chronic aluminum accumulation that is involved in the etiology of a variety of diseases that shorten our lives including: Alzheimer’s disease, atherosclerosis (i.e., heart disease), autism, cancer, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, seizures, and osteoporosis...” (p. 12).

Silica vs. Silica Water

Before I get into the 8 health benefits of silica water, let me first clarify the difference between silica and silica water.

Silica water is one of the most powerful tools for health and longevity on Planet Earth.

Drinking silica water is something that costs almost nothing. And it's super easy to do – all it entails is adding silica to the water you drink and cook with.

I say silica water, but what I really mean is silica. Silica water is just the easiest and most effective way to absorb silica.

Yes, you can actually get a lot of silica from food and drinks... including beer and wine (you're welcome, haha).   I promise to cover food and drink sources of silica in a future blog post – make sure you sign up for my email updates.

However, the easiest away, by far, to get more silica into your diet is by drinking silica-rich mineral water.

Christopher Exley recommends drinking at least one to two liters per day of high-silica water. I personally get this not only from drinking water throughout the day, but also using it to make my coffee and iced tea, and cooking with silica water.

Below, we explore the top eight benefits of silica water, supported by direct quotes and examples from Dr. Crouse's book.

Top 8 Health Benefits of Silica Water

Let's get into it...  8 reasons why drinking silica water is the number one health hack everyone should do…

Silica Water Protects Against Alzheimers Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that impairs memory and cognitive function, significantly destroying quality of life.

Silica water’s ability to prevent and actually reverse the symptoms Alzheimer's Disease of is central to Crouse’s work, inspired by his mother’s diagnosis and how he was able to help her.

By switching to Fiji water, a silica-rich option, his mother’s cognitive health improved, highlighting silica water’s role in detoxifying aluminum.

Crouse writes:

“My interest in silica water was inspired by a desire to help my mother slow the progression of her Alzheimer’s disease. My mother was 86 when she lost her short-term memory and was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The facts that she had MCI and could no longer perform daily tasks such as meal preparation, sewing, and balancing the checkbook, were indications she had Alzheimer’s disease.

In order to save my mother from the terrible death of end-stage Alzheimer’s disease (AD), I devoted myself to studying scientific literature looking for causal factors of AD. My belief was that only by finding a causal factor could I help my mother stop the progression of AD” (pp. 9-10).

Crouse continues:

“After 3 years of reading, I concluded that aluminum is a causal factor of AD and that my mother was being exposed to the following daily sources of aluminum:

  • Drinking Water (50mcg/L aluminum and no silica)
  • Drip Style Coffee Maker - with aluminum heating element (260mcg/L of aluminum)
  • Baking Powder (50mg aluminum per teaspoon)
  • Homemade Tomato Juice - made in an aluminum kettle (>1,000mcg/L of aluminum) I also read Dr. Christopher Exley’s work on daily silica water treatments improving cognition in some Alzheimer’s patients by facilitating aluminum excretion and hoped this might work for my mother” (p. 9).

He goes on to explain how he was able to reverse symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease in his mother:

“Luckily my mother and father still had the ability to adapt to change. In other words, they had resiliency and were willing to make lifestyle changes to avoid sources of aluminum. Most importantly they were willing to switch over to drinking silica water (e.g., Fiji water) instead of tap water.

In 2014, my 87-year-old mother, who at the time was diagnosed with MCI, began daily drinking an OSA (orthosilicic acid) rich water (i.e., Fiji Water) in an effort to improve her loss of short-term memory. My mother is an ApoE E4 carrier.

After two years of daily drinking the OSA rich water there was both a clearly noticeable and clinically evaluated improvement in my mother’s short-term memory at age 89. I was very thankful! Her improved memory allowed my mother to continue to live in her home with only my father’s help.

Mother drank Fiji water every day in her coffee and tea for 5 years from age 87 to 92. After my father died in early 2019 at age 95, my mother no longer regularly drank Fiji water but continued to live alone in her house to age 94½. Sadly since 2019 her memory resumed its decline” (p. 10).

Silica Water Reduces Aluminum Toxicity

Aluminum toxicity occurs when excessive aluminum, a neurotoxin, accumulates in the body, contributing to various chronic diseases.

In the “Aluminum Age,” exposure to aluminum through food, water, and industrial processes is widespread.

And yes, vaxxines are loaded with aluminum. As I said above, almost all vaxxines contain aluminum as an adjuvant. Many other pharmaceutical drugs contain aluminum, as well as fluoride (like Prozac), which increases the availability of aluminum.

Crouse explains, “Aluminum is a neurotoxin and chronic accumulation of aluminum has been linked to a variety of diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease” (p. 12).

Silica water, rich in OSA (orthosilicic acid,) binds to aluminum and facilitates its excretion.

He shares, “We recently did another 24 hour urine test for aluminum (October 2023). We reduced our body burden of aluminum by 40% in the past 2 years by drinking silica rich mineral water” (p. 12).

This detox process mitigates aluminum’s harmful effects on the brain and body.

Silica Water Prevents Heart Disease and Stroke

Heart disease and stroke are leading causes of death globally, often linked to vascular damage and inflammation.

Silica water may lower the risk of heart disease and stroke by reducing aluminum’s impact on the cardiovascular system.

By detoxing aluminum, silica water supports healthier arteries, a trait observed in Blue Zone populations.

Crouse cites a study of aluminum factory workers in his book:

“Do high levels of aluminum in the blood cause coronary heart disease and stroke? This question was answered in an occupational health study of aluminum workers(299).

Forty workers exposed to aluminum while working in an aluminum factory were compared with 40 non-exposed subjects of comparable age who worked in administration at the same factory.

The age range of the subjects was 18 to 62. The workers had been chronically exposed to aluminum dust levels of 0.33 to 3.4mg per cubic meter of air without any protective equipment. The study included a clinical examination of medical records as well as blood tests for aluminum” (p. 120).

He continues:

“Aluminum blood levels of the exposed group were on average nearly 10 times higher than the control. The results of the clinical examination revealed a much higher frequency of both heart attacks and strokes in the exposed group.

In fact, 5 of the 40 exposed workers had a stroke and 14 of the 40 had heart attacks. This compared with 2 cases of possible stroke with a symptom of a paralyzed limb (i.e., monoplegia) and 4 cases of heart attacks in the control group as shown in Table 29. Therefore, aluminum exposure is a likely causal factor of coronary heart disease and stroke” (p. 120).

Silica Water Supports Bone Health and Prevents Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis weakens bones, increasing fracture risk and mortality in the elderly, often called the “silent epidemic.”

Silica water strengthens bones by enhancing collagen and mineralization. This benefit is evident in Blue Zone residents who maintain stronger bones into old age.

Crouse writes:

“Osteoporosis is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly and has been called the ‘silent epidemic of the 21st century’(86).

Clinically osteoporosis increases the incidence of bone fractures of the femur, vertebrae, radius, and hip. These fractures in the elderly rapidly lead to a series of events that can result in death. These events include pain, disability, and loss of independence” (p. 149).

He goes on:

“People living in the Okinawan longevity region have 20% fewer hip fractures than do mainland Japanese and about 40% fewer hip fractures than Americans (113).

The rate of bone mineral density (BMD) loss was compared between Okinawans and mainland Japanese. It was discovered that for women older than 40 and men older than 50, mainland Japanese lose more calcium from their bones than Okinawans (114).

OSA supplementation has been shown to improve BMD by both inhibiting bone mass loss and stimulating bone formation in humans (86-88) and rats (115-117).

Therefore, high bone density in older Okinawans is most likely due to high levels of OSA in their drinking water.” (p. 149).

Silica Water May Help Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that damages the myelin sheath, which is the insulating layer that wraps around nerve cells.

This damage to the myelin sheath causes disability over time.

Aluminum accumulation exacerbates this damage, but because silica water detoxes aluminum, it most likely can help MS.

Crouse states:

“Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease that slows nerve impulses on nerve cell axons. The myelin that coats the outside of axons and associated glial cells (e.g., oligodendrocytes) that make myelin are targets for aluminum accumulation and toxicity (363-364).

In several areas of the world the incidence of MS is rising at the same rate as world-wide aluminum production (227-229, 359-361).

Aluminum ions are known to damage glial cells by stimulating the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) (365). ROS induced inflammation of glial cells results in inflammatory lesions that are characteristic of MS (347).

Compared with those without MS, people with relapsing-remitting MS have 7-fold more aluminum and people with secondary progressive MS have 2.6-fold more aluminum in their urine on average (367).

Also, people with MS have much higher than normal concentrations of accumulated aluminum in their brains (369,488).

Silica-rich drinking water has been shown to increase aluminum excretion in the urine by 2.5-fold in those with MS (368)” (p. 148).

He further explains:

Chris Exley’s group at Keele University has shown that people with MS have a higher-than-normal body burden of aluminum.

They have also shown that OSA rich drinking water facilitates aluminum elimination in those with MS. The median daily aluminum excretion in the urine of people with relapsing-remitting and secondary progressive MS is 7.4 and 2.6 times higher, respectively, than people without MS (367).

The amount of aluminum excreted by those with relapsing–remitting MS was twice as high as people suffering aluminum intoxication” (p. 145).

Crouse continues:

"The median aluminum excretion in the urine of 14 out of 15 people with MS was found to 2.5-fold higher when drinking up to 1.5 liters of silica-rich water (35 ppm OSA) per day with women excreting more aluminum than men (368).

Therefore, people with MS absorb and accumulate more aluminum than normal and silica water facilitates aluminum elimination in those with MS.

But do people with MS accumulate more aluminum in their brains than normal? This question was recently answered by Chris Exley’s group at Keele University (369,488)” (p. 145).

He concludes:

“They analyzed brain tissue for aluminum from 14 donors with a diagnosis of MS and 12 donors without an MS diagnosis. They found that the aluminum content of brain tissue in those with MS was ‘universally high’ with many tissues bearing concentrations in excess of 10mcg/gram dry weight and some exceeding 50mcg/gram dry weight(369).

Aluminum in the brains of those without MS was universally low with the majority of measurements below 1mcg/gram dry weight(488). Aluminum specific staining showed aluminum both inside and outside of cells(369)” (p. 145).

Silica water’s ability to reduce aluminum offers hope for managing MS symptoms.

Silica Water Reduces Risk of Parkinsons Disease

Parkinson’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder causing tremors, stiffness, and impaired movement due to damage in the brain’s substantia nigra.

Aluminum accumulation is a key factor, and silica water may reduce its risk, as it silica water removes aluminum from the body.

Crouse explains:

“Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder of the substantia nigra (SN) region of the brain that is due to both environmental and genetic factors.

The following evidence points to aluminum accumulation being a causal factor of PD:

  • The incidence rate of PD is correlated with increasing worldwide aluminum production.
  • Blood-brain-barrier damage due to TBI and/or aluminum increases the risk of both PD and aluminum accumulation
  • Divalent Metal Ion Transporter (DMT1) genetic expression is increased resulting in the transport of too much aluminum and iron to the brain’s SN region as people age.
  • Aluminum levels are higher in the SN region of the brain in people with PD as compared to people without PD Aluminum alters the metabolism of levodopa resulting in the inhibition of neuromelanin (NM) production and ultimately lowering NM levels by 50% in the SN region of PD patients allowing aluminum to cause oxidative damage to the SN region
  • Lower than normal levels of GSH indicate oxidative damage to the SN region” (p. 153).

Silica water helps protect the brain by facilitating aluminum excretion, as seen in Blue Zone populations with lower neurodegenerative disease rates.

Silica Water Promotes Longevity

Blue Zones, such as Okinawa, Sardinia, Loma Linda, Nicoya, and Ikaria, are regions where people live exceptionally long, healthy lives with low chronic disease rates. Silica-rich water and foods rich in silica are key factors in their longevity.

Crouse writes:

“Over the weeks he discovered high levels of silica in the drinking water in each of the Blue Zones. When he started researching Loma Linda I thought no way could the water there be high in silica. Well I was proven wrong and I am glad I was! The evidence is too strong to ignore” (p. 12).

He adds:

“Research on the world’s five blue zones, where people live longer than normal, reveals high levels of dissolved silica in their drinking water. This book describes this research and explains why dissolved silica is a causal factor of longevity” (p. 12).

This aligns with Dr. Weston A. Price’s findings in his groundbreaking book, Nutrition and Physical Degeneration, in which he documented communities eating nutrient-dense, traditional diets who all had exceptional health.

Silica-rich ground water and soil may very well be the connecting factor that all of the communities around the world eating traditional food had in common.

Silica Water is AntiAging

Silica water promotes a youthful appearance, enhancing overall vitality. Aging skin loses elasticity, which causes wrinkles. As we age, our hair follicles lose their strength, which results in thinning.

Silica water supports youthful skin and thicker hair by helping to build collagen and other structural proteins.

Crouse explains:

“Youthful skin appears soft and smooth. If you pinch youthful skin between your fingers and pull then release, the skin will snap back in place due to collagen. As we age our outer tissues lose their framework of structural proteins, such as collagen.

Older skin sags and wrinkles as the collagen becomes weaker. OSA both activates enzymes that cross-link collagen and is incorporated into structural proteins as a cross-linker.

This adds strength and elasticity to your body’s structural proteins just as cross-linking with sulfur during vulcanization adds strength and elasticity to rubber. This strength and elasticity will allow skin to snap back in place preventing or removing wrinkles.” (p. 165)

How to Start Drinking Silica Water

You can either buy silica water or you can make your own.

How to Make Silica Water at Home

I prefer to make my own silica water, based on Dennis Crouse’s recipe. It is a lot cheaper to make at home, and I use it to cook with and make coffee and iced tea.

Here is my recipe for making silica water at home: How to Add Silica to Drinking Water.

How To Add Silica to Your Drinking Water
In this post, I’ll cover how to add silica to your water, why we need silica in water and how to make high-silica water at home for pennies.

Where to Buy Silica Water

If you prefer to buy silica water, Fiji water is the number one silica-rich option recommended by Crouse.

He recommends other brands of water as well, but Fiji is the highest in silica.

Here is the list from his book (he has more options in the Appendix):

"There are commercially available natural waters rich in OSA. In the following list the waters tested for OSA concentration are indicated with a * (see Appendix I for more silica waters):

  • Starkey Spring Water from Idaho is available from Whole Foods (93ppm OSA*)
  • Fiji water from Fiji is available in the U.S.A. (146ppm OSA*)
  • Langkawi Pure from Malaysia is available in Asia and U.S.A. (133ppm OSA*)
  • Volvic water from France is available in the U.S.A. and Europe (51 ppm OSA*)
  • Gerolsteiner from Germany is available in Europe (64ppm OSA*)
  • Acilis water from Malaysia is available in Europe (88ppm OSA)" (pp. 14-15).
