Don’t you just love egg nog during the holidays? I do! It’s so creamy and delicious. And it always puts me in the mood to wrap gifts and bake cookies.

And when the weather is cold outside, it’s just the thing to warm you up and give you energy.

If you’re on the GAPS diet, you may think you can’t have egg nog, but now you can!

This is such a nourishing drink. Of course we know the benefits of egg yolks — especially if the eggs are from pastured hens. They are rich in vitamin A and D and cholesterol, which we need for healthy hormones.

Coconut milk is super healthy, too, rich in saturated fat which our bodies and brains thrive on.

A little over a cup (10 ounces) of coconut milk provides over tablespoon of coconut oil. If you’re trying to get more coconut oil into your diet, why not try egg nog? I take 1-3 tablespoons of coconut oil every day, and I’d rather take it in egg nog than off the spoon.

Recipe Notes

Egg nog is delicious warm or chilled. You can make this recipe ahead and keep it in a pitcher in the fridge. It’s one of my favorite afternoon snacks and it’s the perfect thing to serve at a holiday get-together.

Be sure that the coconut milk you buy does not have any additives. It is best to make coconut milk at home with shredded coconut (it’s also the most cost-effective way). Comment if you want a recipe and I’ll post it soon.

If you are sensitive to coconut, you can use almond milk in this recipe. Just be sure to use homemade almond milk, as store-bought almond milk is full of sugar which is not allowed on the GAPS diet.

You need to use homemade vanilla extract, because storebought vanilla extract may contain gluten. See my recipe for how to make homemade vanilla extract.

If you don’t have any homemade vanilla extract on hand (it takes a while to make it), you can omit it.

GAPS Diet Egg Nog

Serves 4


Coconut milk (4 cups)
Egg yolks, pastured (6)
Honey, raw (1/4 cup)
Vanilla extract, homemade (1 tsp)
Nutmeg, ideally freshly grated, or ground


Blender or food processor
Nutmeg grinder


1. Blend the coconut or almond milk together with the egg yolks, honey and vanilla in a blender or food processor until smooth. Alternatively, you can warm everything together on low heat in a saucepan, whisking until blended.
2. Pour into glasses.
3. Grate fresh nutmeg over egg glass.
