Real Food Kitchen Tour: Homemade Mommy

Welcome to another edition of the Real Food Kitchen Tour. This week we’re featuring Lindsey Gremont, author of the Homemade Mommy blog.

What’s a Real Foodie?

A “real foodie” is someone who cooks “traditional” food. We cook stuff from scratch using real ingredients, like raw milk, grass-fed beef, eggs from chickens that run around outdoors, whole grains, sourdough and yogurt starters, mineral-rich sea salt, and natural sweeteners like honey and real maple syrup.

We don’t use modern foods that are either fake, super-refined, or denatured. This includes modern vegetable oils like Crisco and margarine, soy milk, meat from factory farms, pasteurized milk from cows eating corn and soybeans, refined white flour, factory-made sweeteners like HFCS or even refined white sugar, or commercial yeast.

We believe in eating wholesome, nutrient-dense foods that come from nature. So we shop at farmer’s markets or buy direct from the farmer, or we grow food in our own backyards.

This Week’s Real Food Kitchen Tour: Homemade Mommy

This week we travel to Austin, Texas to tour the kitchen of Lindsey Gremont, author of Homemade Mommy.

Lindsey is also our newest Real Food Media blogger and we are excited to feature her kitchen. Here’s a peek at Lindsey’s kitchen!

Blog Name: Homemade Mommy
Blog Author: Lindsey Gremont
Location: Austin, TX
How Long Blogging: Started the Homemade Mommy blog 3 years ago but have been blogging regularly for the past year.
House or Apartment: House
Size of Kitchen: We have a nice sized kitchen – for me it was the selling point when we looked to buy our house.
Things You Love About Your Kitchen: I love that my kitchen is very inviting – I want to be in there.  I have a nice window to look out of while cooking and washing dishes onto our backyard.  I also have a lot of room to spread out and a lot of storage space.  I love my very large sink and that I have a gas vs. electric stove top which I think makes a huge difference in my recipes.  I also love that I have room in my garage for an extra fridge and two freezers to store our bulk meat purchases!  A few years ago I started a vegetable garden and we recently expanded it to create a new planting bed exclusively for herbs.  We are blessed to be in Austin, TX where we can have vegetables and herbs year round.  Believe it or not, our best planting season in Central Texas is actually the Fall going through Winter.  I grow lettuce, arugula, cabbage, broccoli, collard greens and kale most of the year and then switch to hot and sweet peppers and tomatoes and eggplant for the very hot and dry summers.
Things You Would Change:  I would love to have a double oven – I entertain a lot and having two ovens would really help! Someday I will get rid of the microwave because we don’t use it anymore and it is basically wasted space right now.  I also would love a bigger walk in pantry so I could buy more items in bulk.
Favorite Tools & Gadgets: I have so many kitchen items I love and use every day it is hard to choose my favorites!  My butcher block wood cutting board I had handmade on etsy.com is a very beautiful and useful add to my kitchen. I also can’t live without my Miracle Stainless Steel Rice Cooker which I use multiple times a week to make rice cooked in chicken bone broth and coconut milk.  I use my food processor almost daily to make homemade mayo and homemade chocolate fudge and right now with all of the eggplants we are getting I am making quite a lot of babaganoush!  I also love my cast iron skillet to make my eggs every morning!
Biggest Challenges Cooking Real Food: Storage space – buying grass fed meats and fish in bulk is the most economical and we recently bought our first side of veal from our local dairy farm as well as almost 100 lbs of wild Alaskan sockeye salmon.  We had to find a chest freezer pretty quickly to put in our garage to store it all!  Time can also be a challenge as I am a mother to a 3 year old and I work full time at IBM.  Thankfully I work from home and have a very flexible schedule otherwise I think doing this would be impossible.
Current Family Favorite Meal: Basic pan fried veal steaks or salmon filets, brown rice, kale chips and our favorite creme fraiche sauce!
Favorite Cookbooks: [easyazon-link asin=”0967089735″ locale=”us”]Nourishing Traditions[/easyazon-link] changed my life but I am a foodie and have always loved to cook so some of my other favorites are chef grade cookbooks on techniques like [easyazon-link asin=”0470194960″ locale=”us”]Sauces by James Peterson[/easyazon-link] and [easyazon-link asin=”0316118400″ locale=”us”]The Flavor Bible by Andrew Dornenburg[/easyazon-link] which is a fun book where you can look up any ingredient and it will give you flavor profiles used by chefs!

Let Us Tour Your Kitchen

Are you a real foodie? Do you have a kitchen that you’d like to see featured on CHEESESLAVE?

Please email me at annmarie AT cheeseslave dot com. Either send me a link to a Flickr set or email me your photos (minimum of 5, but more is better). Note: Please send me LARGE photos. Minimum 610 width. If they’re too small, I can’t use them.

Oh, and please send the answers to the above questions (at the very top of this post).

As much as I’d love to include all the photos I receive, I can’t guarantee that I will use your photos in the series. I’m looking for creative, good quality photos.

Some ideas for photos:

  • Show us what’s in your fridge or what’s fermenting on your counter
  • Take some snaps of some of your favorite kitchen gadgets, or show us how you organize your spices
  • Got backyard chickens? Send some pics!
  • How about a lovely herb garden?
  • Kids or pets are always cute!
  • Try to include at least one photo of yourself, ideally in your kitchen

And no, you don’t have to have a blog to be included in the tour.
