Real Food Kitchen Tour: Living Low Carb…

Welcome to another edition of the Real Food Kitchen Tour. This week, we travel to South Carolina to tour the kitchen of Karen Sorenson, author of Living Low Carb… One Day At A Time.

What’s a Real Foodie?

A “real foodie” is someone who cooks “traditional” food. We cook stuff from scratch using real ingredients, like raw milk, grass-fed beef, eggs from chickens that run around outdoors, whole grains, sourdough and yogurt starters, mineral-rich sea salt, and natural sweeteners like honey and real maple syrup.

We don’t use modern foods that are either fake, super-refined, or denatured. This includes modern vegetable oils like Crisco and margarine, soy milk, meat from factory farms, pasteurized milk from cows eating corn and soybeans, refined white flour, factory-made sweeteners like HFCS or even refined white sugar, or commercial yeast.

We believe in eating wholesome, nutrient-dense foods that come from nature. So we shop at farmer’s markets or buy direct from the farmer, or we grow food in our own backyards.

This Week’s Real Food Kitchen Tour: Living Low Carb… One Day At At Time

This week we travel to Charleston, South Carolina to tour the kitchen of Karen Sorenson, author of Living Low Carb One Day At At Time.

Karen is a food lover focused on getting healthy through real food.  She blogs about life with her fiancé and her journey to lose 100 lbs by cutting carbs and maintaining a lifestyle rich in nutritious food.

Blog Name: Living Low Carb… One Day at a Time
Blog Author: Karen Sorenson
Location: Charleston, South Carolina
How Long Blogging: I started my blog about 11 months ago to help me stay focused on maintaining my weight loss and I have learned a lot over that time about healing the body through food.
House or Apartment: House
Size of Kitchen: 11 ft x 10 ft
Things You Love About Your Kitchen: I love that my kitchen has an island.  It’s the first kitchen I’ve had that has an island in the center and I love the extra room!  I’m always cooking something so it’s nice to have the extra counter space.
Things You Would Change: Since I can’t change the fact that I’m so short then I’d love to change the height of the cabinets.  I have a hard time reaching the third shelf without a step stool so the fourth shelf is definitely out of reach.  Also, I haven’t had a chance to decorate yet so I need to add more COLOR!!
Favorite Tools & Gadgets: KitchenAid Stand Mixer and my slow cooker.  My stand mixer allows me to whip up healthy baked goods and there is always something cooking in my slow cooker.  I like it because I can make large batches of food and take leftovers all week.
Biggest Challenges Cooking Real Food: Planning ahead and making sure I have fresh ingredients on hand.  I love planning so it’s something I enjoy, but if I skip a week then I get totally off track and end up at the grocery store every day (which means extra $$$ spent)
Current Family Favorite Meal: I’m always coming up with something new, but Pot Roast with Roasted Garlic Mashed Cauliflower usually ends up making a repeated appearance at our dinner table.
Favorite Cookbooks: I don’t really use cookbooks anymore, but my favorites are [easyazon-link asin=”1936608758″ locale=”us”]Practical Paleo[/easyazon-link] and [easyazon-link asin=”B005YNAXYG” locale=”us”]Low Carb-ing Among Friends Cookbooks[/easyazon-link].

Let Us Tour Your Kitchen

Are you a real foodie? Do you have a kitchen that you’d like to see featured on CHEESESLAVE?

Please email me at annmarie AT cheeseslave dot com. Either send me a link to a Flickr set or email me your photos (minimum of 5, but more is better). Note: Please send me LARGE photos. Minimum 610 width. If they’re too small, I can’t use them.

Oh, and please send the answers to the above questions (at the very top of this post).

As much as I’d love to include all the photos I receive, I can’t guarantee that I will use your photos in the series. I’m looking for creative, good quality photos.

Some ideas for photos:

  • Show us what’s in your fridge or what’s fermenting on your counter
  • Take some snaps of some of your favorite kitchen gadgets, or show us how you organize your spices
  • Got backyard chickens? Send some pics!
  • How about a lovely herb garden?
  • Kids or pets are always cute!
  • Try to include at least one photo of yourself, ideally in your kitchen

And no, you don’t have to have a blog to be included in the tour.
